OUR ISLANDCARE COMMITMENT

Ballard’s has dedicated the 2007 season and all to follow to environmental responsibility. Being environmentally responsible is not a one day job. It is a commitment and one that Ballard’s is dedicated to. Ballards has been formally recognized as a “Green Property” and every season, new products and practices will be introduced to Ballard’s IslandCare program, furthering our vision to reduce our impact on Block Island’s environment. Of course, all the while we protect the high quality hospitality experience our guests expect.

ISLANDCARE PRODUCTS AND PRACTICES

As part of Ballard’s IslandCare, we continually adopt standard environmentally friendly products and practices with high-impact and benefit to our Island.

Below are a few of Ballard’s IslandCare efforts:

• Our Pledge: Ballard’s pledges to eventually power it operations entirely with renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy.
• Cleaning Supplies: The restaurant and rooms are cleaned with environmentally friendly cleaning products
• Recycled Paper: Property wide printing on recycled paper
• Towel/Linen Reuse: Guests have the opportunity to do their part to reduce energy and detergents required for daily washings 
• Energy Conservation: Property lighting is retrofitted and audited to ensure energy efficient bulbs are in place
• Water Conservation: Implementation and auditing of low flow systems for faucets, toilets, showers and grey water recycling program  
• Best Practices: At our resort you may find environmental activities such as recycling of coat hangers, reduction or elimination of Styrofoam cups, paperless check-ins/outs, organic flowers, and more...
• Donation programs: Instead of being thrown away, unused amenity bottles are donated and used by local charities
• Transportation: Have asked our staff to make commitments of their own, such commuting on bikes or motorized bikes to work and encouraging friends to buy energy-efficient light bulbs.
• Suppliers: Ballard’s has demanded all suppliers to decrease their supply of nonrenewable energy such as that generated by burning coal or gas.
